Cyclone Melissa Intensifies As It Heads Toward the Island Nation

Tropical Storm the storm is forecast to become a rare category five cyclone as it turns in the direction of Jamaica, delivering life-threatening sudden floods and landslides.

The cyclone, which had winds of up to 120 miles per hour as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is presently veering north-west in the Caribbean and is anticipated to reach land by early next week, according to hurricane specialists.

Alerts of electricity outages and damage to infrastructure have been released as this storm generates up to 30 inches of rain and coastal flooding as high as 4m above ground. "Take cover without delay," locals have been advised.

This hurricane is the thirteenth hurricane in this year's Atlantic storm period, which typically ends in the eleventh month.

Category Five Hurricane Danger

A highest-level cyclone is the most intense classification, with sustained winds of at least 252 km/h.

While this storm is expected to reduce in intensity to a Category 4 hurricane before making landfall on Jamaica, authorities said there was "almost no noticeable change in the overall impacts" upon reaching the coast, and that the storm will be "equally strong" when it strikes the country.

With tropical storm-level gusts and precipitation already expected ahead of it crosses central Jamaica - possibly even the city of Kingston - alerts emphasize that "safety measures need to be finalized quickly".

"A multi-day period of harmful winds and heavy rainfall have begun and will cause catastrophic and life-threatening sudden floods and numerous mudslides," urged meteorological officials.

The country's head of government the statesman commented: "I realize that there are numerous residents who are worried, who are deeply troubled, and with good reason: worry is natural.

"Yet the best way to manage worry and any apprehension and concern is to stay ready."

Locals are being told to secure their homes with sandbags and timber panels, and to gather necessary supplies.

Wider Effects

Advisories are also in effect for areas in Haiti encompassing the main city, Port au Prince, the neighboring country and the eastern part of Cuba, where this storm is expected to bring similar effects by the middle of next week.

Rock slides already being caused by the hurricane have resulted in two fatalities in Haiti, according to the nation's Civil Protection agency.

Expected Trajectory

The hurricane is forecast to pass over the island nation by Wednesday before traveling via the Greater Antilles and emerging into the open ocean.

By the moment it reaches Cuba, it is predicted to have diminished to a third-level cyclone.
